Description
This carving features a classic rectangular jade pendant, known as a 牌子 (Pái zi), depicting a standing Buddha—possibly Amitabha Buddha (阿弥陀佛) or Shakyamuni Buddha (释迦牟尼佛)—in a serene landscape setting.
💎 Material: Crafted from two-zero icy nephrite jade, this piece has an exceptionally translucent, ice-like appearance. The material exhibits a clean, luminous quality that is highly desirable among jade collectors. Fine icy nephrite with this level of visual clarity is relatively uncommon and sought after.
🕵️♂️ Iconography: The standing Buddha is framed by a full head halo (nimbus), with the sauwastika/swastika symbol (卍) prominently carved on the chest. In Buddhist tradition, this ancient auspicious symbol is associated with good fortune, virtue, and the cosmic order. The Buddha’s right hand is raised in a mudra, while the left hand rests naturally downward in a welcoming gesture.
📈 Carving: The figure is rendered in low-to-medium bas-relief and is integrated with traditional natural motifs, including what appear to be pine branches and/or mountain clouds along the right edge and upper portion. The composition reflects the aesthetic of classical Chinese Buddhist and landscape carving.
